Baltimore-Washington CSA

The Combined Statistical Area is a unity of the Baltimore metropolitan area and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. 

  • Approximately 90 percent of Maryland's 5.6 million residents live in the densely populated corridor between Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
  • The Washington-Baltimore CSA comprises over 8 million people and is the 4th most populous CSA in the U.S.
  • The combined area is significantly larger than even the faster growing metros in the U.S. such as Dallas, Houston and Atlanta.
  • The Baltimore-Washington area ranked 1st in per capita income as of 2009 according to the US Census Bureau.
  • As of 2007, the Washington-Baltimore CSA was 3rd in effective buying income with $224 billion and 4th in retail sales with combined sales of $144 billion. 
  • The CSA generates over $340 billion in personal income.
  • The Baltimore-Washington region has the most highly educated workforces in the United States. As of 2009, 42.5% of the population had a bachelors degree or higher and 19.7% had a Masters/Professional Degree or higher.
