Maryland is ahead of the curve in labor relations.
On April 9, 2007, Maryland became the first state to require contractors to pay workers a living wage, at least equal to $11.30 an hour in urban areas and $8.50 an hour in rural areas.
Since January 2006, companies operating in Maryland with over 10,000 workers must spend at least 8% of their payroll on health care for their employees. Michigan, New Jersey and Oklahoma passed similar legislation, and other states are considering taking action.
