  • #4 in VC Deals:  Washington-Baltimore ranked 4th for the total number of venture capital deals in biotechnology in the five year period from 2003 to 2008, behind only San Francisco, Boston and New York. 
  • #6 in Biotechnology Funding:  Washington-Baltimore ranked 6th for venture funding in biotechnology among US regions, with almost $991 million invested from 2002 to 2006.  The top regions were San Francisco, Boston and San Diego.
  • #1 in VC Growth:  Washington-Baltimore ranked first for growth in venture capital investment (134.3 percent) and deals (121.5 percent) among top markets for biotechnology when comparing the past five years (2002 to 2006) against the previous five (1997 to 2001).
  • #3 in SBIR Awards:  Maryland ranks 3rd among the 50 states, behind only California and Massachusetts, for Small Business Innovation & Research dollars awarded, at $113.6 million in 2004.
  • The Greater Baltimore area is home to ten nationally recognized research universities, as well as Johns Hopkins University, which ranks #1 for R&D expenditures.
    • VC Clustering:  Over 89 percent of all US venture capital invested in biotechnology over the past five years was in firms located in the top 9 benchmark regions.
