Amazing Regional Assets

In terms of university and institutional assets, Washington-Baltimore ranks among the top regions in the world.  It is home to the NIH and it’s 6,000 on-campus scientists; the Johns Hopkins University consistently ranks as the world’s leading medical hospital and the largest recipient of research funding of any U.S. university; and the University of Maryland, which is a highly-regarded research university in its own right.  Consider these facts:

  • Johns Hopkins ranks first among all US Universities for overall R&D expenditures; the University of Maryland, Baltimore ranks 35th, and the University of Maryland, College Park ranks 43rd.
  • Johns Hopkins ranks first for NIH awards among all US universities, with over $607 million in 2005.  The University of Maryland, Baltimore ranks 32nd with over $181 million.
  • The Washington-Baltimore region ranked 3rd among US metro areas for NIH awards, with $1.45 billion in 2003.  Greater Baltimore alone ranked 8th.
  • Johns Hopkins ranks 3rd for biotechnology patents among all universities.
  • Johns Hopkins ranks 7th for biotechnology publications among all universities.
