Telephone and cable services are primarily provided by Verizon Maryland—the largest provider in the state.

  • Verizon serves nearly four million access lines with a network valued at $5.5 billion
  • Verizon's "Intelligent Network" is among the most advanced in the country with more than 95 percent of access lines served by digital technology
  • Verizon's coverage in the Baltimore and Washington metro areas includes self-healing synchronous optical network (SONET) ring technology to ensure integrity of communications
  • In 2006 Verizon Wireless invested more than $290 million in enhancements to its local network and intends to do the same in 2007.

Services are also available through MCI, AT&T, Comcast, Vonage, and other cable and wireless providers.

Maryland also has an increasing cell phone subscriber base and growing network options.  From 2000 to 2005, Maryland subscriber base increased by 145 percent, ranking 7th nationally.  Now 90 percent of the State's population has a cell phone.
