Baltimore City is located 38 miles north of the U.S. capital, Washington, D.C., and 95 miles south of Philadelphia. Among U.S. cities, it ranks 18th in population. Outstanding attractions abound throughout the city, extending well beyond Baltimore's famous Inner Harbor waterfront.
Baltimore City is home to the world-renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital and School of Medicine, the largest recipient of federal research dollars in the country. The University of Maryland Medical System is located in new, state-of-the-art facilities in Baltimore's redeveloping West Side. Both Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland, Baltimore, in cooperation with the city, are developing biotech parks. These new research parks, combined with the Johns Hopkins Bayview Research Campus, and the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute, make Baltimore a life sciences capital.
The Port of Baltimore is a significant economic engine for the region, generating $1.5 billion in annual revenue and supporting 33,000 jobs. A strategic Mid-Atlantic location and inland setting make the port one of America's top container terminals. State-of-the-art facilities also contribute to the port's ranking as a national "RO-RO" (roll-on, roll-off) leader. Foreign Trade Zone #74 includes fourteen sites within close proximity to the port and over two million square feet of manufacturing, assembly, warehouse and distribution space.
Baltimore's 13,700 businesses create a diverse economy and employ 273,800 workers. An estimated 423 of these businesses have 100 or more workers. Major employers include the Johns Hopkins institutions, the University of Maryland Medical System, Constellation Energy Group, Bank of America, Verizon, Legg Mason, T. Rowe Price and Under Armour. Baltimore has a state-designated Enterprise Zone and a federal urban Empowerment Zone offering economic benefits to eligible businesses.
