Some of the largest and best known locally-owned firms include:  Constellation Energy (4,000); McCormick & Company (2,267); T. Rowe Price (1,796); PHH (1,134); Legg Mason (1,250); AAI (1,097); W.R. Grace (698); and Black & Decker (1,000+).

Out-of-State-Owned Firms
Some of the largest out of state-owned firms include:  Northrup Grumman (8,000 employees); Southwest Airlines (2,425); Computer Sciences Corporation (1,829); BD Bioscience (1,767); Lockheed Martin Aerospace (1,133); Verizon (3,000); Random House (830); Gore-Tex Products (2,324); SAIC (1,900); Arbitron (700); and Booze Allen (1,400).

Operated by Federal Government
The federal government also operates a number of strategic facilities in the region that employ a large number of knowledge-workers including:  National Security Agency/Fort Meade (30,000); Aberdeen Proving Ground (12,000); Social Security Administration (9,800); US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (2,968); The US Naval Academy (2,052); and the US Coast Guard (1,200), among others.

Jobs Generation
The region generated about 6,000 jobs last year from relocation and expansion of existing firms, most of which are owned by out of state firms.  This includes investment in biotech (5 new firms at the University of Maryland biopark in 2006, including one from Japan); Dryer’s Ice Cream manufacturing facility (700 new jobs); attraction of financial services firms Chubb (200 jobs) and Morgan Stanley; attraction of new jobs for Booze Allen and others related defense contracting; attraction of 300 new jobs from American Healthways, and a many other smaller investments.
