Singles and young families are discovering that Hampden's small town atmosphere and proximity to downtown make it one of the most desirable of Baltimore's neighborhoods. Hampden is great place to live, work and play. It is also a fun place to visit with scores of elegant to funky stores, eclectic restaurants and special events like the Hon Fest.
Hampden is one of ten featured Baltimore Main Streets, each of which maintains an organization that collaborates with the city to strengthen and improve these designated commercial districts. The National Trust for Historic Preservation established the National Main Street Center in 1980 to assist with the revitalization of historic downtowns. Known as "the Avenue," Hampden's Main Street features 100 retailers and restaurants and is known for its artisan galleries and funky boutiques.
Hampden contains a variety of housing styles with the most predominant being the row house. While most row houses are two story, some three-story units can be found as well. Many are over 100 years old, providing the option of small front yards and porches. In addition to the row house, there are also some victorian single-family homes and duplex homes on many of the streets, particularly on the hillsides adjacent to the Jones Falls Valley. There are also some unique residences ranging from apartments above retail establishments along "The Avenue" and a few renovated warehouses. The mix of housing styles provides a "village within the city" feel.
