Greater Baltimore

  • Of the school districts nationally with more than 250,000 students, the Baltimore metropolitan area ranks 3rd as the best public education systems.
  • According to U.S. News and World Report’s Best Colleges survey, Johns Hopkins University holds the following rankings:
    • 1st in graduate public health.
    • 2nd among top research medical schools, with top five rankings in the following specialties: AIDS, drug/alcohol abuse, geriatrics, internal medicine, pediatrics and women’s health.
    • 4th in nursing, with top ten rankings in community/public health nursing and nursing services administration.
    • 5th in graduate biology, with top ten rankings in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, neuroscience, and molecular biology.
    • 6th in graduate biology, with top ten rankings in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, neuroscience, and molecular biology.
    • 14th overall among top national universities that offer doctoral degrees.
    • 14th in undergraduate engineering, with a 1st place ranking in both undergraduate and graduate biomedical engineering, 2nd in graduate and 3rd in undergraduate environmental health.
    • Top ten rankings in graduate English and history.
    • Top ten rankings in health policy and management, and nonprofit management.
  • According to U.S. News and World Report’s Best Colleges survey, the University of Maryland, College Park holds the following rankings:
    • 1st in graduate criminology.
    • 6th in graduate business information systems.
    • Top ten in graduate education programs including: counseling/personnel services, educational psychology, higher education administration and special education.
    • Top ten rankings in undergraduate management information systems and supply chain management/logistics.
    • 13th in graduate computer science, with a top ten ranking in artificial intelligence.
    • 13th in graduate physics, with top ten rankings in atomic/molecular/optical, nuclear, plasma and quantum physics.
    • 17th in graduate engineering, with a top ten rankings in graduate and undergraduate aerospace engineering.
    • 18th overall among top public national universities that offer doctoral degrees.
  • The University Maryland at Baltimore ranks:
    • Among the top ten U.S. law schools in health care law, environmental law and clinical training.
    • 7th nationally in nursing, with top ten rankings in adult and family nurse practitioner, and nursing services administration.
    • 9th nationally for its pharmacy program.
  • St. Mary’s College of Maryland ranks 4th among top public liberal arts colleges in the nation.
  • Salisbury University ranks 7th and Towson 9th  among public northern universities that offer undergraduate and master’s degrees. 
  • Hood College ranks 18th overall and second in best values among northern universities that offer undergraduate and master’s degrees.
  • Maryland Institute College of Art ranks 4th overall for its master of fine arts program, with top ten rankings in graphic design and painting/drawing.
  • Loyola College ranks 2nd among top northern universities that offer undergraduate and master’s degrees.
  • Towson University ranks 6th among northern universities that offer undergraduate and master’s degrees.
  • Stevenson University ranks 13th overall and 7th in best values among northern comprehensive colleges.
  • The United States Naval Academy ranks 1st in the nation among top public liberal arts colleges, and 3rd in undergraduate engineering (among schools without PhD programs).  Its programs in aerospace, electronics/communications and mechanical engineering rank in the top 10.
  • The University of Baltimore ranked in the top 25 programs nationally with an “entrepreneurial emphasis.”

 

State of Maryland

  • There are 42 “Green” elementary, middle, and high schools in Maryland, 28 of which are in the Greater Baltimore region. Schools that have been awarded “Green” status work toward a healthier environment and impart an understanding of their impact on their community and the world upon students.
  • Maryland ranks 2nd nationally in the percentage of 2007 public high school graduates who scored at the mastery level on Advanced Placement (AP) exams, and 2nd in the percentage increase of students scoring at the mastery level. The state ranks 3rd in the percentage of public school students who took an AP exam in high school.
  • According to Education Week’s Quality Counts annual assessment, Maryland’s K-12 public school system ranks 3rd nationally, with particular strength in student achievement.
