Greater Baltimore

  • Baltimore ranks 5th, advancing from 16th in 2007, in a list of America’s Most Wired Cities as compiled by Forbes’ magazine. The ranking is based on internet broadband adoption, the range of internet service providers, and the availability of public wireless hot spots.
  • Scarborough Research studied broadband internet users and found that Baltimore ranks 29th in the U.S. for the number of at-home broadband users; compared to all Internet users in the U.S., broadband users are well-educated and affluent.

State of Maryland

  • The Milken Institute ranked Maryland 2nd in “technology economy preparedness,” in 2008.
  • Maryland ranks highly in several indicators of the technology intensity of its business base. The state ranks 4th in employment in high-technology businesses as a share of all employment (15.1%), 4th in net high-tech business formations as a share of all businesses (.35%), and 4th also in the high-tech share of all business establishments (10.3%).
  • Intel has ranked the Baltimore area as the 44th most “unwired,” meaning that it has great free wireless access throughout the city.
  • Maryland ranks 5th nationally for its concentration of high-tech jobs; 6th for tech job growth; 4th for venture capital investments; and 12th in total tech workers.
