On September 26, 2007, the BEA introduced prototype estimates of GDP by metropolitan area.  The prototype estimates are based on county earnings by industry estimates from BEA's local area personal income accounts released April 26, 2007 and on the GDP-by-state estimates released June 7, 2007. County earnings data are not available prior to 2001 on a NAICS basis. Therefore, the reference (or base) year for the real (chained-dollar) estimates is 2001.

Therefore, GMP measures are not available pre-2001.
