With the region’s population projected to increase by more than 8% by 2010 from 2.6 million to almost 3 million, Greater Baltimore is well-poised to maintain its vibrant economy. Already, approximately 90 percent of Maryland's 5.5 million residents live in the densely populated corridor between Baltimore and Washington, D.C.—the 4th most populous CSA in the nation with more than 8 million people.

  • Nearly half of the State’s population lives in the Baltimore Region.
  • Three of the most densely population counties in the State are in Greater Baltimore—Baltimore City and neighboring Baltimore and Anne Arundel Counties

Further expounding this growth in the region will be the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure decision with more than 40,000 new jobs expected in the region by 2012—bringing even more people, spouses and families with the jobs.

   Many of these positions are likely to be
in the high-paying 
   Information Technology (IT) sector.  Salaries for the federal
   and related private sector contractor jobs associated with
   BRAC are expected to range from $80,000 to 105,000,
   which will add to the ever-increasing wealth of the region.

       

    Among the 364 metropolitan areas reported in 2006, the

    Baltimore Region ranks 20th with a per capita income of

    $41,320.


    The Washington-Baltimore CSA is one of the wealthiest

    in the nation

 

  • Ranks 1st in median household income ($71,537) 

  • Ranks 4th in effective buying income ($199 billion)

  • Ranks 4th in retail sales ($123 billion)

  • Higher incomes in the State are in the urbanized counties of the Baltimore-Washington corridor with the top-ranking county in the State in the Baltimore region—the median household income in 2005 for Howard County was $88,600.
