Greater Baltimore experienced a stronger labor force growth than the rest of Maryland.

Labor Force

  • The labor force and employment in the Greater Baltimore region grew at a slightly faster rate than the rest of the state in 2006 and 2007.
  • The total civilian labor force in the Baltimore region grew to over 1.4 million people in 2006, an increase of nearly 7 percent since 1997; the Maryland labor force grew by only 3 percent during the same period.

Unemployment

  • The Baltimore region offers an unemployment rate that has consistently been lower than the national average since 1999.
  • The unemployment rate averaged 3.7 percent in 2007, experiencing a steady decline since 2003.
