Region On Point March 2020 - Special Edition COVID-19

COVID-19 has and will continue to dictate how we go about our daily business, both professionally and personally.  Mandatory closures and restrictions and strongly worded recommendations and advice are issued daily if not more frequently from a number of sources including local and state governments, medical and academic institutions, businesses, the federal government, and national organizations such as the CDC and NIH.

The seriousness of the situation cannot be overstated. In recognition of that, EAGB is issuing this special edition of Region On Point, dedicated to keeping our readers and followers informed and providing links to resources and additional information. While it is unrealistic to include all sources – many of which are very frequently updated – the information we are including will provide guidance for employers and employees as we all work together to control the spread of COVID-19 and, hopefully, return to “business as usual” as quickly as possible.

Last week, as the spread of COVID-19 was accelerating across the country and in Maryland, EAGB Board member Brian Pieninck, President & CEO of CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, requested that EAGB distribute recommendations to guide our Board and stakeholders as they institute new procedures for conducting business during this crisis. Implementing these recommendations is more critical now than it was a few days ago; consequently, we are including Mr. Pieninck’s message below in its entirety.  I can’t urge our readers strongly enough to immediately institute these procedures:

Mr. Pieninck’s updated message and information to CareFirst stakeholders issued on March 16 can be found – along with important information from Maryland Department of Commerce, Maryland Health Department, and BGE – in our Important Resources for Businesses section of this special newsletter edition. Links to each of Greater Baltimore’s jurisdictional COVID-19 information websites are included in the #ICYMI section as well.

There is no doubt that our daily routines will be anything but “routine” in the foreseeable future.  However, while much is out of our control, we can and must adhere to all mandatory restrictions and implement all recommended restrictions collectively to minimize the impact of the pandemic in our Greater Baltimore community.

Maryland Department of Commerce has shared a newly launched COVID-19 webpage on the Maryland Business Express portal that features resources available for businesses, including guidelines for employers, fair labor standards, information on insurance claims, opportunities for financial assistance, tax questions, and more - Coronavirus (COVID-19) Information for Businesses:

Maryland Health Department has a dedicated coronavirus webpage with an interactive map showing confirmed cases by county. The map can be seen at

BGE is taking steps to support customers during the coronavirus pandemic and is  providing important energy assistance programs available to customers

CareFirst is keeping their website updated with information and any changes. A link to Brian Pieninck’s March 16, 2020 letter to CareFirst stakeholders can be found at
