Research Rankings & the Region: Get to Know Our 3 Rs

The Greater Baltimore region has long been a hub of research that has led to breakthroughs in preventing, lessening, or curing countless medical conditions. In this month's Greater Perspective, EAGB focuses on the recent announcement that the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) has achieved the coveted "Research 1" (R1) Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education - the nation's highest level of attainment for a research university.

To date, none of the nation's 146 R1 institutions is an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities). Morgan State University in  Baltimore City, a current "R2" institution and Maryland’s Preeminent Public Urban Research University, intends to change that.
