UMBC Reaches Highest Classification for Research Output
President Freeman A. Hrabowski III has led the University of Maryland, Baltimore County for 30 years. Under his leadership, and just a few months before his retirement, UMBC has been granted the prestigious R1 Carnegie Classification - https://gestar2.umbc.edu/news-highlights/. The classification is based on the determination that a university has “very high research activity” and is widely considered a top indicator of an institution’s research output. Among other major accomplishments, in 2021, UMBC had $80M in research expenditures and its faculty earned $200M in research awards. “Achieving the R1 classification is significant because, hopefully, it will encourage even more top minds to apply to work and study at UMBC,” said President Hrabowski.
